    Summary:[要旨]事業の多角化は企業が持続的に成長する上で,重要な戦略となっている。経営戦略やコーポレート・ファイナンスの分野で,多くの研究が蓄積されている。しかし,多角化が企業のパフォーマンスにもたらす影響である多角化効果については依然として合意が形成されていない。本研究では企業が多角化戦略を採用する動機について整理を行い,多角化効果が生じる背景について明確にする。また,多角化戦略の経済的な帰結について整理を行い,多角化効果の中身について議論を行う。[Abstract] Diversifying the business is a vital strategy for companies to achieve sustainable growth. There exist enormous papers which are investigated the whether the corporate diversification effects on the performance. However, it remains controversial. The purpose of this paper is to summarize the motives for the diversification from the view point of the theory of management strategy and corporate finance. This may be allowed us to clarify the background of the economic consequences resulted from the diversification.

    Summary:[要旨]本研究では, 企業がリスク分散やシナジー効果の追求を目指して行う多角化戦略が既存事業の競争力を弱めてしまうメカニズムを, 事業部間の相互作用の観点から明らかにする。本研究では以下の点が明らかとなる。 企業の持続的成長と収益性の安定を目指して行う多角化戦略は既存事業の販管費を高止まりさせるため, 多角化企業の既存事業は国内外の新興企業と比較して高コスト構造になりやすい。 他方, 多角化による新規事業の成長は企業内における既存事業の相対的地位を低下させるため, 既存事業に対する資源配分プロセスを変化させる場合がある。 このような中で既存事業の市場が一度衰退し再成長局面に入るような場合, 不況期に低コスト体質で経験を積んだ国内外の新興企業が急速に成長するため, 多角化企業の既存事業の競争力は低下してしまう場合がありうる, ということである。 [Abstract] In this paper, we try to explain the mechanism that "Diversification Strategy" to reduce financial risk and get synergy effect between the existing and new divisions could result in competitive disadvantage of the existing division. Because the success of the diversification strategy increases the selling and general administrative expenses and overhead cost of the existing business more than that of the emerging or specialized companies. At the same time, once it lowers the position of the existing business in the diversified company and the business becomes a peripheral division in it, the resource allocation processes in the company could be changed. If the product market of the existing business fluctuates, the existing division in the conglomerate could result in competitive disadvantage.

    Summary:[要旨] 本稿は, 日本の主要造船会社を分析対象とし, 造船業における製品戦略(船種の選択)と経営成果との関係を定量的に分析する。分析の結果, 日本の造船業では付加価値の高い高度技術船や1隻あたりの売上高の大きい大型船の建造比率を高ある戦略よりも, たとえ1隻あたりの売上高が小さくても, 経験効果を十分に活かすことのできる中型船の建造比率を高める戦略を選択する方が収益率にプラスの効果をもたらす, ということが明らかとなる。 [Abstract] In this paper, we analyze the relation between product strategies of major Japanese shipbuilders and their financial performance. The conclusion is that the product strategy of making middle-large ship results in higher financial performance than that of building large or high-technology ship. Because the companies that commit the former strategy can get experience effects.
