Summary:[Abstract] Within mainstream L2 motivation research questions of gender and identity have yet to be adequately addressed. This is particularly troubling since in the past five years interest in identity and the "L2 self" have been the most highly written about topics in the field. The reasons why researchers have avoided the topic of gender and motivation is due to the restrictions of the privileged methodology, psychometrics. This paper introduces an alternative approach to gender and motivation based in psychoanalysis and Marxist theory and proposes that gender is a construct that is complicit in the reproduction of unequal relations in society. Data from a discussion between three men is introduced and discussed to highlight the ways in which they construct their masculinity in regard to the acquisition of English by appropriating hegemonic masculinity.
